STEPS

IVF consists of five steps to complete an IVF cycle.

Ovarian StimulationIn a normal menstrual cycle, women ovulate an egg. With the use of various medications to stimulate multiple eggs in the ovaries, the number of follicles can increase. That’s why we use various medicines for 8 – 12 days in order to grow more follicles. When the follicles reach the right size, the patient receives an injection of hCG in order to trigger the ovulation. Eggs are collected after 36 hours after the trigger shot.

Oocyte Pick up (Egg Collection)The patient’s eggs are retrieved under anesthesia using ultrasound guidance and sent to the laboratory for fertilization. The egg retrieval process (transvaginal USG guided aspiration) usually takes 30 minutes and the patient is able to go home after a few hours.

FertilisationonThe fertilization process involves placing healthy sperm with each egg and allowing it to incubate overnight. In some cases where fertilization is difficult to achieve, a single sperm is injected into each egg. This process is called ICSI (injection of sperm into the egg). Fertilization usually occurs after 16 – 20 hours.

Embryo Developement

2 days after fertilization, the eggs become embryos with 2 to 4 cells. On Day 3 of the development, usualy embryos has 6-12 cells. 5-6 days after fertilization, the embryos develop and become blastocysts (aprox 120 celles). If necessary, PGT can be performed on blastocysts.

Embryo transfer – STEP 5

Usually 3-5 days after fertilization, the embryos are placed in the most favorable part of the uterus. The number of embryos transferred depends on the patient’s health condition, age and embryo quality. The remaining embryos can be frozen and stored for future cycles by cryopreservation. After two weeks, a blood pregnancy test is performed.
